Your PIN replaces your password
Every family member now signs in with their own 6-digit PIN — the same PIN on every device where your family is set up, and much quicker to type than a password. Anyone still on a password is offered a PIN at their next sign-in, and parents can set or reset a child’s PIN from their bean page. Face ID and fingerprint unlock continue as before in the iPhone and Android apps.
Your family’s Recovery Kit
The Recovery Kit is a one-page master key (a printable PDF with a QR code) that opens your family’s data even if every device and PIN is ever lost. Every family should download theirs — new families create one during setup, and existing families can get theirs now from Settings → Security & Recovery. Keep it somewhere safe, outside your family’s own Google Drive. An optional memorable passphrase can be added there too.
Link a new device in seconds
Signing in on a new phone or computer? A signed-in device can now show a QR code (Settings → Security & Recovery → Link a Device) — scan it with the new device, sign in with your PIN, done. No password, no re-invite.
