🌤️ Show the weather on the beanie wall and in the Nook

3 min read · Updated 2026-10-16

Is it a coat day or a sandals day? The weather sits right beside the plan for the day, so the family can see it at a glance without picking up a phone. You set a home town once, and the beanie wall, its night screen and the Nook all use it.

Set your home town

1

Open Settings and go to Region & Holidays.

2

Make sure Show Weather is switched on.

3

In Home Town, type a city or a ZIP code and pick your town from the list that appears.

4

Under Temperature, choose °F or °C. The default is °F for the United States and °C everywhere else.

The home town is shared by the whole family and is set by a pod manager. Everyone then sees the same weather on their own device.

Where the weather shows up

  • The beanie wall: a weather card with the conditions now, today’s high and low, and the next three days. Each wall has its own Size on This Wall setting: Large (now, plus the next 3 days, the default), Small (just right now) or Off.
  • The wall’s night screen: a quiet weather line under the clock. It shows the three days unless the wall is set to Off.
  • The Nook: on a phone, the weather joins the date line at the top; on a desktop, it is a small weather card.

When the weather is out of date

beanies.family refreshes the weather while the app is open. If the device is offline or the weather service is busy, the last reading stays on screen with a note such as As of 3h ago, so you always know how fresh it is. A reading older than 12 hours stops showing the current temperature, because it would be misleading.

If there is no reading at all, you will see Weather is unavailable right now. We’ll keep trying. You do not need to do anything: it tries again on its own, and the weather comes back as soon as it can reach the service.

🧳 Home weather, wherever you are

A parent who is travelling still sees the weather for your home town, not for where they are. That is on purpose: it is the family’s weather.

Your privacy

Your location is only used with your consent, when a pod manager types a home town. beanies.family never reads your device’s location, and no GPS is involved. The weather comes from Open-Meteo, and the only things sent are the town you type (to find it) and its rough location, about a kilometre. Nothing else about your family is shared. The readings are kept on your device only.

Turning weather off

Switch Show Weather off in Settings → Region & Holidays and every weather lookup stops for the whole family. Your home town is kept, so switching it back on picks up where you left off. To hide the weather on just one wall, set that wall’s Size on This Wall to Off.
