Someone in your family updated beanies and compacted your family file, which rebuilds it without its record of past changes so it opens faster and works on older tablets. A compacted file is saved in a newer format. A device still on an older version of beanies cannot read that format, so it shows this message and stops syncing until it updates.
Your family file is intact and everyone else is using it. The device showing the message has simply not caught up yet.
What to do
Update beanies on this device. In a browser, reload the page and beanies updates itself. In the iPhone or Android app, update it from the App Store or Google Play.
Open beanies again. The family file opens normally and syncing resumes.
On an iPhone or Android device, beanies now offers to update itself when a newer version is out, so this message should become rare. Tapping Update opens the App Store or Google Play, where you install it as you would any other app. beanies only insists on the update when it genuinely cannot open your family file without it, and it shows the store link on screen when it does.
Why beanies stops instead of carrying on
An older version does not understand how a compacted file is put together. If it tried to combine its own copy with the family file anyway, it could quietly undo the compaction for the whole family and lose recent changes. Refusing to open the file until the device updates is what keeps everyone else’s data safe.
When you update, beanies brings across what you added while this device was out of date. If it cannot do that safely it tells you and keeps your changes until you decide. Updating as soon as you can is still the easiest path.
What not to do
- Do not clear your data or sign out to fix this; it changes nothing and removes your local copy.
- Do not re-try your PIN or recovery code; this is not a sign-in problem.
- Do not pick a different family file. The one beanies is pointing at is the right one; it just needs a newer beanies to open it.
